DVD Review: South of the Border

Because of his fondness of conspiracies and selective presentations of fact in his narrative movies (sorry Doors fans, they weren’t going to play Woodstock anyway), it’s easy to pigeonhole Oliver Stone as a loon with a camera.
At his best, however, Stone can help viewers discover viable alternatives to the official versions of history and current events. Much of the recent coverage …

Review: Oliver Stone DVD Examines Rise of Socialism in Latin America

Newsblaze
South of the Border DVD Review
by Kam Williams
If you’ve read “Confessions of an Economic Hitman” by John Perkins, then you are well aware of the lengths to which CIA and other agents operating on behalf of the U.S. government and Fortune 500 corporations have gone to install puppets as heads of state in countries all across Latin America. But those still in the dark about America’s role in countless coups around the region, might feel enlightened by South of the Border, as informative a …

Guardian Op-Ed: “Oliver Stone’s new film, South of the Border …allows six of these new wave leaders to speak for themselves”

An excellent op-ed by The Guardian’s Seumas Milne sums up the changes underway in South America, citing “South of the Border”: “Both the scale of the transformation and the misrepresentation of what is taking place in the western media are driven home in Oliver Stone’s new film, South of the Border, which allows six of these new wave leaders to speak for themselves. Most striking is their mutual support and common commitment – from Cristina Kirchner of Argentina to the more leftist Evo Morales – to take back ownership of their continent.”

LA Times Accurately Describes Venezuelan TV Station as “Obviously Slanted” With “No Pretense of Impartiality”

It has been generally standard fare in the media to refer to Venezuela’s Globovision as the “sole opposition-aligned television channel,” as the AP has put it.  Rarely, if ever, is the actual reporting of Globovision put into context, which makes a July 29 Los Angeles Times article all the more amazing.  Chris Kraul and Mery [...]
